KYN provisional-storage disclosure

Status: proposed for the first public beta · not active until KC activation

KYN is being built in public as a prototype. The intended first live deployment uses an existing Optiplex storage device whose reliability does not meet our target for durable production infrastructure. We are accepting that availability and data-loss tradeoff so the public can see the real need before money is raised or spent on replacement storage.

What this means

  • the beta may be interrupted, rolled back, or paused after a disk or host failure;
  • recent pseudonymous enrollment, claim, challenge, or recovery records could be lost despite backups;
  • KYN will not enable sensitive-evidence collection, binding polls, determining polls, or statutory claims on this provisional release;
  • service health, backup age, restore evidence, incidents, and the eventual storage replacement will be documented publicly without publishing secrets or private participant relationships; and
  • participants should treat every credential as a limited beta artifact, not as a durable government or legal record.

Mitigation

Before activation, the operator must create an encrypted backup, restore it into an isolated database, verify the restored state, and bind the resulting evidence hash into the release record. Service secrets are created directly on the host, never committed to source, and kept separate from the public evidence record.

Replacement storage and monitored power are the first public financial and polling goal within the broader technology budget. Deployment proceeds on the active Optiplex; funding triggers a controlled live-state migration to the upgraded hardware. The current public posture is provisional_beta, accurately describing the storage risk while the deployed system demonstrates why the upgrade is urgent.
